Project Summary (December 2016 - November 2019)
This is holiday home on the banks of the Papamoa beach in Coromandel area of New Zealand, and a masterpiece from the award wining Herbst architects.
Structural System
The structure consist of 3 section
The East wing: 2 level section consist of a master bedroom at the top level and lounge at the bottom level.
The Middle: This is a single storey row of rooms connected by a corridor.
The west wing : A single storey courtyard and a reinforced concrete wall foundation garage
The structural system employed is a Timber sub-floor foundation, Steel portal systems in west wing, lightweight timber framing to the middle section of the house, inclined steel overhanging balconies west wing.
My Responsibility
I was the structural engineer responsible for the structural design and construction monitoring and main point of contact for all things structural engineering from foundation to the roof.
Key Skills Deployed
Stakeholder management: During the design phase I had collaborate with the architect extensively to manage expectations on what was possible within cost constrains on various design details. These details included how much timber subfloors framing could cantilever out.
Communication: detailing all site inspections and instructions in site reports, email correspondences, and verbally communicating with builders my site instructions and seeking to understand their challenges.
Quality Control: Ensuring that all consented plans and specifications are properly translated on site; such as steel splice details, paint and galvanization of steel sections, ensuring the use of stainless connectors in exposed areas, balustrade connections fixings and post spacings.
